Chapter 13

The End is Only the Beginning

I awoke in an alien landscape, ensconced by luminescent trees that shimmered with an otherworldly glow. Disoriented and alone, I found myself in this enigmatic world with no recollection of my journey here. Compelled by a strange urge to traverse this uncanny realm, I ventured deeper into the forest – a labyrinth with no visible exit or signs of life. The surrealism of my surroundings was dreamlike, yet my mind felt tethered to reality. I was left to ponder whether I was truly awake.

Scaling a nearby hill, I hoped to gain a comprehensive view of this mystic land. Upon reaching the crest, I was left breathless at the spectacle before me. A massive wall, a monolith that stretched across the horizon, marked the boundary of this forest. Beyond it, a cityscape unfolded - buildings, towers, and ambiguous shapes that danced in the sky. Could they be birds, or perhaps something more arcane, but from my vantage point, they appeared as mere specks in the azure expanse. Resolving to approach the wall, I hoped its inhabitants might help me.

As I journeyed onward, I was abruptly halted by an unseen force, akin to a punch that bore no pain, but served as a clear warning. I spun around to confront my assailant, only to be engulfed by darkness. A chilling, scaly grip seized me, pulling me into a nebulous cloud of black smoke. Struggling to breathe and see, the pressure from the grip and the suffocating smoke intensified until unconsciousness claimed me.

Blinking open my eyes, I found myself in a chilling tête-à-tête with a dragon. Coated in coal-black scales with an underbelly of light blue, it towered over me. Its size was formidable, yet not as colossal as the dragons of legend. It bore razor-sharp claws and teeth, and its eyes held a peculiar mix of curiosity and amusement. Fear gripped me. The instinct to flee was overwhelming, yet escape seemed futile. The creature addressed me in a voice that reverberated through the air.

"Ah! I knew you were coming. Welcome to our realm! You are Raphael, aren’t you? Oh sorry, I forgot to present myself. I am Zeno." The dragon beamed, seemingly amused by my shock.

Rendered speechless by its ability to converse and identify me, I grappled with my fear.

"Fear not, little human. I mean you no harm. I am here to guide you towards the right path." The dragon's voice had a calming cadence.

The label "little human" stung, underscoring my insignificance and vulnerability in this strange world.

"Which path?" I managed to stammer out.

"What will your next move be?" The dragon countered

"I... I wish to reach that city," I stuttered, indicating the wall.

"A wise decision," the dragon approved. "Are you aware of why you're here, and how you came to be in this place?"

I shook my head, utterly clueless. My only certainty was that I was no longer among the living and had somehow found myself in this mysterious place.

"Allow me to enlighten you," the dragon offered. "You were brought here by your celestial guardians. They wish for you to aid us, and in turn, yourself. Our world is currently at peace, but the future remains uncertain. Listen closely to my words, for they will be my last to you: When you..."

The dragon began to weave a tale about myself and this world, a narrative that was as poetic as it was prophetic. It was a tale that inspired awe and fear in equal measure. The words "nothing is going to change" resonated in my mind, a haunting refrain.

As the dragon concluded its tale, it summoned the black smoke once more.

"Wait!" I cried out. "I have more questions!"

But it was in vain. The dragon vanished into the smoke, leaving me alone once again.

I cautiously surveyed my surroundings, ensuring no other dragons were lurking in the shadows. My gaze then drifted back to the wall, now just a few strides away. I pondered why the city's inhabitants had not come to investigate the smoke and commotion. Perhaps they were indifferent, or simply oblivious. My hope was that they would prove to be friendly, rather than ruthless beasts. I inhaled deeply, gathering my courage, and resumed my journey.
